The Texas Glory bested Mercado Peterson Athletics 2012, 8-1, after a 90 minute limit in five innings on Wednesday afternoon.
In the first inning, half of the damage was done by Texas, scoring four runs to Mercado’s zero. Mercado’s pitcher, number five, had a challenging time finding her groove.
She hit the first batter, leading to a stolen base on a wild throw, and a mound visit after just two pitches. A ground ball to third base put runners on first and second off the get-go. She walked the bases loaded on the next batter for the Glory.
With the bases loaded and zero outs, Mercado coach decided it was time to change things up and replaced number 5 for number 22. The fresh pitcher started off hot with a strikeout for her first batter.
The Athletics got their first out on a dribbling ground ball to the Glory’ shortstop, but not on the throw to first. There was some contact with the runner going to third and the shortstop transitioning to throw. The umpires huddled up and decided the runner was out after colliding with the shortstop, but the run still counted.
Texas Glory continued their clinic with three more runs to finish off the top of the fourth inning; Glory 4, Mercado 0.
Athletics put up their first and final run in the first inning. You could tell both teams were a bit caught up in the moment. A base on balls and pop up single gave Mercado runners on first and second right away.
The Athletics attempted a double steal, failing with the runner going to third getting caught. After her second walk, Glory pitcher had runners on first and third. The perfect opportunity to bait the catcher.
The first base runner tried stealing second and the catcher tossed the ball down to second. During the throwdown, the third base runner took her chance and went for home, giving the Athletics their first run of the game.
A diving chance at a catch in foul territory by the catcher clearly put her in some discomfort. She took some time to shake it off and got back behind the plate to finish the long inning.
The second inning was completely opposite of the lengthy first inning. Both teams' defense had apparently settled in and took no time getting back into the dugout to get the offense going.
The Glory’s batters didn’t let up, scoring once again in the top of the third with a deep fly ball to left center, scoring one. An error by the pitcher throwing to first let yet another run score, giving Texas a 6-1 lead.
Mercado came up to bat as the game continued to the third, but the Glory pitcher set them down, three-up-three down as the number 25 catcher returned from her injury.
Number 25 must have had enough time to recover because her next at bat she ripped the ball to right field, scoring two more runs for Texas and giving them a seven run lead. After two and a half innings, the Glory were up 8-1.
Not a whole lot of offense was seen the next few innings but the defense was on display. In the bottom of the fifth, Mercado tried their all to get back in the game. It looked like the life was taken out of them when number four hit a grounder to third and Texas first baseman made an incredible dig to keep the Athletics off the base paths.
Number 19 ended up grounding out to second base for the final out as the game had hit 90 minutes. Both pitchers did a great job following the first inning. Texas number seven ended the game with three K’s while Mercado Peterson number 22 finished with five.
